The French Butter Bell Collection

There is a simple, old-fashioned magic to keeping fresh, soft butter ready at a moment's notice on your kitchen counter. Our hand-thrown French butter bells (sometimes called butter crooks or butter keepers) use a centuries-old design to keep your butter perfectly spreadable without refrigeration.

The bell consists of two matching pieces: an outer crock and an inner lid shaped like an upside-down cup. To use it, you pack one block of softened, high-quality butter firmly into the dry inner cup. Next, pour about a third of a cup of fresh, cold water into the bottom of the outer crock. When you place the butter cup upside down into the water, a natural, airtight water seal is created. This seal keeps oxygen away from the butter, preventing spoilage and keeping it sweet, fresh, and soft for weeks on your counter. Just change the water every few days, and you will always have perfectly spreadable butter ready for your morning toast.

Every piece is individually shaped on the potter's wheel in our quiet studio from durable Canadian clay. We hand-paint each natural motif using our custom-formulated glazes, creating a beautiful heirloom piece that looks lovely on a kitchen island, dining table, or sunny window ledge. To keep your butter bell beautiful for years to come, please handle with care, though both pieces are fully dishwasher safe for easy cleaning between fillings. Because each unique piece is individually handcrafted, please allow 2-3 weeks for delivery. We wrap each crock and lid snugly in thick paper and pack them safely inside a sturdy box for a secure journey.
